Tooth Extractions in Campbell Dental Associates, IN

Schedule Your Appointment Today!

In dentistry, we strive to save and preserve natural teeth in order to maintain a healthy smile. Some oral conditions require the extraction of teeth to maintain the health of the mouth. If teeth are infected, impacted, or unable to be repaired, removing them from the mouth is the best way to restore a healthy environment.

A tooth extraction may be necessary for patients who are about to start orthodontic treatment, or have stubborn baby teeth that block an adult tooth. Dr. Campbell at Campbell Dental Associates routinely performs simple and surgical extractions of teeth for patients of all ages. Simple extractions remove teeth that can be seen in the mouth or are easily lifted from the socket. We invite you to make an appointment at Campbell Dental Associates by calling us at (812) 446-1211 if a problematic or hopeless tooth is affecting the health of a family member.

Is it Necessary to Remove a Tooth?

Our team of surgeons is proud to provide advanced expertise and years of experience to help improve the health and appearance of your smile. The health of your mouth is at risk if you leave problematic teeth in place. We recommend that you remove these problematic teeth in order to prevent any future complications. Our team at Campbell Dental Associates routinely removes teeth that are suffering from various oral conditions. The following are some of the more common oral conditions that require tooth extractions:

  • Abscessed (infected) teeth
  • Severe Bone Loss
  • Advanced Periodontitis
  • Fractured Tooth Root
  • Breaking at or near the gumline
  • Impacted teeth
  • Wisdom teeth problems
  • Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment

Adults who require a tooth to be extracted are often advised to have it replaced with dental implants. Dr. Campbell will help you decide if dental implants are the best option for replacing a tooth after an extraction.

What is the Procedure for Tooth Extraction?

We place patient safety and comfort above all else. When you come to our office for an initial consultation, we'll help you decide which sedation or dental anesthesia is best for your extraction. Our team will ensure that you are comfortable on the day of your surgical or simple extraction. Dr. Campbell uses advanced, expert-level techniques to remove the tooth as gently as possible from the jaw, while causing the least impact on the surrounding teeth and gums, bones, and nerves.

We may use an instrument to lift the tooth out of its socket. Incisions can be made in the gum by Dr. Campbell for surgical extractions. In this way, they can better access the tooth that has been impacted in the bone. The tooth can be broken into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove and cause less damage at the extraction site. Sutures can be used depending on how much invasion there is at the extraction site. Most likely, the site will be covered with gauze in order to reduce blood flow. To keep you comfortable, our surgeons may prescribe pain medications, antibiotics or over-the-counter pain relievers.

After Tooth Extraction

We will give you post operative instructions to follow. If you had sedation for your extraction it is very important to have a responsible adult who you trust drive you home.

A clot forms over the extraction site as your mouth heals. It is important to preserve this clot for your healing. It can cause a condition known as "dry socket" if it is dislodged. To help prevent dry socket avoid spitting or using a straw in the first few days following your extraction. It is also recommended that you avoid eating anything hot or cold (lukewarm food is the best). Cold compresses can be used to reduce swelling in the jaw. We will usually schedule a second appointment about a week after the extraction to assess your healing and recovery.
